Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by persistent elevation of blood glucose levels due to defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Insulin, a hormone produced by the beta cells of the pancreas, plays a vital role in regulating blood sugar and maintaining normal carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism. When insulin production becomes inadequate or when the body develops resistance to insulin, glucose accumulates in the bloodstream, leading to hyperglycemia and progressive metabolic dysfunction.
The major forms of diabetes include Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, caused by autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells resulting in absolute insulin deficiency, and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, which is primarily associated with insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form and is strongly linked to genetic predisposition, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy dietary habits, stress, and metabolic syndrome. Other forms include gestational diabetes and secondary diabetes associated with endocrine disorders, pancreatic disease, or medications.
Common clinical symptoms include polyuria (frequent urination), polydipsia (excessive thirst), polyphagia (increased hunger), unexplained weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, recurrent infections, delayed wound healing, and generalized weakness. Long-standing or poorly controlled diabetes can lead to serious microvascular and macrovascular complications including diabetic neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy, peripheral vascular disease, coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, and diabetic foot disorders.
Diagnosis is based on clinical evaluation and laboratory investigations such as fasting blood sugar, postprandial blood sugar, HbA1c levels, oral glucose tolerance test, and urine analysis. Early diagnosis and long-term glycemic control are essential to prevent progression and complications.
In Ayurveda, Diabetes Mellitus is broadly correlated with Madhumeha, a disorder involving derangement of Kapha dosha, impaired metabolic fire (Agni), tissue depletion, and dysfunction of body channels (Srotas).
