COVID – 19 disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus is relatively a new disease, with fresh information being known on a dynamic basis about the natural history of the disease, especially in terms of post-recovery events. After acute COVID-19 illness, recovered patients may continue to report a wide variety of signs and symptoms including low-grade fever, fatigue, body ache, cough, sore throat, difficulty in breathing etc. all of which may relapse and remit. If the symptoms persist for 4-12 weeks post-recovery, it is called ongoing symptomatic COVID and if they last for over 12 weeks, it is called post-COVID syndrome.

Keeping this in view, RISHI put forth a holistic rejuvenation and management protocol for follow up care and well being of all post COVID recovering patients incorporating conventional treatment modalities along with our C 30 IMMUNITY BOOSTER. The recovery period is likely to be longer for patients who suffered from a more severe form of the disease and those with pre-existing illness.

PREAMBLE

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a global health crisis posing an unprecedented public health emergency. The number of deaths and people being infected are increasing daily throughout the globe. This situation is much more severe due to the possible devastating social and economic state of affairs evoked by the unanticipated pandemic. Effective management to address this infection is still evolving and attempts are being made to integrate traditional interventions along with standard care.

Here at RISHI AYURVEDA HOSPITAL AND RESEARCH CENTRE, we comprehend the factuality that Ayurveda can certainly play a pivotal role to augment the preventive measures against this pandemic. The current understanding of COVID-19 indicates that a good immune status is vital to prevention and to safeguard from disease progression.

IMMUNITY IN AYURVEDA

In Ayurveda, immunity is referred to as vyadhikshamatva. Ayurveda has a comprehensive approach of immunity encompassing two-fold management, respectively of health and disease. Vyadhikshamatva is the resistance of the body to fight a disease by either of the following two ways:

Vyadhi -Bala- Virodhitvam – The resisting power of the body to restrain or withstand the strength or severity or progression of a disease. Vyadhi- Utpada- Pratibandhakatvam – The resisting power of the body to prevent the manifestation of a disease. Significantly, various modifiable factors have been enlisted in Ayurveda that influence the host defense responses.

(Bala/Vyadhikshamatva). These factors include a healthy diet (Pathyaahara), condition of biological humors (dosha) and the state of physical and mental health (Sareera).

Keeping this in view, RISHI AYURVEDA put forth an integrative prevention protocol that incorporates a 5 phased etiquette highly acclaimed to boost the immune system of each body constitution, thereby maintaining optimum health and preventing COVID-19.

Always choose a mask with a nose wire. Nose wires prevent air from leaking out of the top of the mask.

Do not combine two disposable masks.

Wear a disposable mask underneath a cloth mask. Cloth mask should push the edges of the disposable mask against your face.

Regular exercise and following healthy diet will help us maintain blood sugar levels under control and thus prevent the risks of diabetes.

Losing weight may help prevent diabetes to greater extents. If you have type 2 diabetes, Rishi Hospital suggests you to lose weight and become more physically active. This will help you keep the blood sugar levels within the limit.

As per the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), a clinical study conducted by the National Institutes of Health; losing five to seven percent of your body weight and doing regular mild exercises like brisk walking for at least 150 minutes a week can help prevent type 2 diabetes.

How to know if I am overweight?

Counting two figures you can understand whether you are overweight or not. The first one is the body mass index –BMI score, while the second one is waist size in inches. Any BMI score of below 25 is considered normal and anything beyond this point is overweight (up to 29.9 BMI) and obesity (30+ BMI score).

Women and men with waist sizes of over 35 and 40 inches respectively are said to be overweight. They are prone to have many diseases which are associated with obesity or overweight.

Overweight or obesity is associated with a number of health problems including diabetes. It increases the risks of diabetes, heart diseases and certain types of cancer among others. Overweight in pregnant ladies affect the babies even. Here Rishi Hospital explains how the overweight affects diabetes.

Health Problems associated with overweight include type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, fatty liver disease, certain types of cancer, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, heart diseases and strokes, kidney disease and pregnancy problems.

Link between Type 2 Diabetes and Overweight

Type 2 diabetes is one of the leading causes of deaths across the globe. Many factors like family history or genes, lifestyle, poor diet, low activity level, etc. cause type 2 diabetes. Apart from these, obesity or overweight also remains one of the major causes.

A person is said to have diabetes when his blood sugar levels are above normal. High blood sugar can lead to various health issues including heart disease, kidney failure, blindness, etc.

Overweight and diabetes

Though the reasons are unclear, studies and researches by Rishi Hospital and others have proven that over 87% of adults with diabetes are overweight or obese. This shows that fat or obese people are more prone to be affected with deadly disease.

Overweight is said to directly affect the functions and production of insulin which is the key hormone managing the blood sugar levels in the blood.

About Rishi Hospital

Rishi Hospital and Research Centre is one of the most trusted names for Ayurveda treatments for diabetes. Having a history that dates back to two centuries, they hold it as their mission to deliver the patients best of treatments possible.

If diagnosed and treated in time, Diabetes is not a serious illness. But, a delay in beginning the treatment in time could lead to death. In short, it is very important to diagnose and treat it at the earliest as possible.

How could you know if you have developed diabetes? Though analyzing the symptoms one may be able to identify it, not everyone can analyze it properly.

At first, people may go wrong in their analysis as they are not experts in judging the symptoms rightly. Secondly, various sicknesses have some common symptoms.

You cannot distinguish the different types of diabetes from the symptoms either. Hence, identifying a sickness from just one single symptom is not advisable.

Rishi Ayurveda Hospital and Research Centre, one of the leading ayurvedic hospitals in Kerala, recommends you to consult with a doctor at the earliest to diagnose if you have diabetes or not. There are various blood tests for the same.

Rishi Ayurveda Hospital suggests the following body-gestures or instances as times for you to schedule a meeting with the doctor.

Cut or sore not getting cured: If your cut or sore is not curing as it is expected, treat it as the first sign for booking an appointment with the doctor.

Treat any changes in digestion, urination or sexual functions as another reminder. These could also be due to diabetes.

Diabetes could make the patients feel tingling or burning. So, be careful. You may feel your hands or feet so weak that you cannot sleep properly.

Dizziness is another sign which also speaks of the necessity of meeting a doctor at the earliest. Though treated as one of the first symptoms of diabetes, dizziness does not mean that your nerve system is damaged. Having a medical checkup once a year is always advisable.

It is important to note that the signs and symptoms may not always mean you have diabetes. They could be signs of other diseases which require medical treatment. As in the case of diabetes, early diagnosis and timely treatment remains important for preventing future problems.

Once affected with diabetes, you can control it only with regular exercises and following a healthy diet. Here we are discussing three super foods for diabetes. Including these foods will improve your health and help you fight diabetes in a better way.

Non-Starchy Vegetables

Non-starchy vegetables like broccoli, beetroots, artichokes, asparagus and others have fewer carbs per serving. These vegetables not only satisfy your hunger but also provide you with sufficient amounts of vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients.

Non-starchy vegetables are low in calories and carbs. Thus they remain one of the best foods any diabetic person can take in without fear.

ALSO READ: IDEAL DIET AND LIFESTYLE FOR DIABETES

As per the American Diabetes Association (ADA), most of these vegetables have a GI score of 55 or less. Studies have proven that including non-starchy vegetables in one’s daily diet can help reduce the risks of type 2 diabetes.

ALSO READ: DIABETES AND TREATMENT: WHY EARLY DIAGNOSIS IS IMPORTANT?

Kale and Other Leafy Green Vegetables

Leafy green vegetables are other super foods for diabetes to be included in one’s daily diet. Some of them like Kale can provide cent percent of vitamin A and K required for the day.

Among the leafy green vegetables, Kale can be treated as the king. Collard greens are another important leafy green. It also is packed with a ton of nutrients into a small package.

Kale contains glucosinolates, a type of chemicals which help neutralize cancer-causing substances. It is also full of potassium. Studies show that kale is helpful in managing blood pressure.

People with diabetes must take care to include foods with low glycemic index (GI) score in their daily diet.

Some foods are healthy, nutritious and full of proteins and vitamins. But this does not mean that they are good for people with diabetes. Here is how you can choose the right foods with low GI scores.

Choosing foods must be done very carefully. Besides nutrients, one needs to note down the glycemic index (GI) of a food before including that food into one’s diet.

ALSO READ: IDEAL DIET AND LIFESTYLE FOR DIABETES

What is GI?

The glycemic index (GI) is the measurement on how quickly a food raises the blood sugar. Foods with a GI score of 55 or less can be taken by diabetic people while any food with above GI score of 70 or more must be avoided.

ALSO READ: DIABETES AND TREATMENT: WHY EARLY DIAGNOSIS IS IMPORTANT?

In general, foods with lower GI scores are the best choice for anyone affected with diabetes. These foods will ensure health and blood glucose levels within the control.

Non-starchy vegetables, tomatoes, citrus fruits like orange, grapefruit, etc. are some of the best foods with low GI score. Studies have proven that they are capable of reducing the risks of diabetes.

ALSO READ: DIAGNOSIS OF DIABETES; TYPES OF BLOOD TESTS

On average, orange has a GI score of 40. It is to be noted that even unsweetened orange juice has the GI score of 50. With a GI score of just 25, grapefruit has the lowest GI score among all the citrus fruits.

Berries like strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries are also good for diabetes as they also have a low GI score.
